Whitby's Hudson House care team shortlisted in prestigious national awards

A dedicated care team in Whitby is celebrating after being shortlisted in two categories at a prestigious national awards programme recognising excellence across the social care sector.

Hudson House, part of Milewood, has been named a finalist in both the Rising Stars Team Award and The Unsung Stars Award at the Stars of Social Care Awards 2026.

The nominations recognise the remarkable transformation of the team over the past year under the leadership of service manager Sandra Rolfe, who joined the service during a period of significant change.

Since taking on the role, Sandra has worked closely with colleagues to rebuild morale, restore a strong sense of purpose, and create a positive and forward-thinking culture.

The team is now described as motivated, proactive and focused on delivering meaningful outcomes for the individuals they support.

This renewed energy is already making a tangible difference. In one recent example, the team supported a gentleman, who is currently very unwell, to fulfil a lifelong ambition of riding in a tractor.

The experience was extended further with a personalised tour of a local farm, ensuring he could fully enjoy something deeply meaningful to him.

Alongside this, the team has embraced new initiatives, including a garden project designed to grow their own fruit and vegetables as part of a wider sustainability drive.

The project reflects both creativity and a commitment to enriching everyday life for those living at Hudson House.

Martyn Heginbotham, chief executive of Milewood, said: “Since joining Hudson House, Sandra has transformed the team in ways that are nothing short of remarkable.

"When she arrived, morale was low and the service had lost its sense of direction following several management changes.

“Sandra stepped in with energy, empathy and a clear vision, working closely with the team to rebuild confidence, values and purpose.

"Her leadership has reignited passion across the service, and the team is now thriving.

“Their commitment to person-centred support is evident in everything they do, from helping someone achieve a lifelong dream to developing new initiatives that enhance daily life.

"I couldn’t be prouder of what they have achieved so far, and I am delighted to see their efforts recognised at a national level.”

The Stars of Social Care Awards celebrate the very best individuals and teams across the UK, highlighting those who go above and beyond to make a positive difference in people’s lives.

Winners will be announced later this year.
