Appeal to find final resting place of last American Civil War veteran who lived in Flamborough
An organisation is looking for information regarding the last veteran of the last American Civil War who died in the UK.
George M Green was born in Maine, USA, in 1845 and his last known whereabouts was in Flamborough.

Despite intensive searches by Ensign John David Camp No.10 (an organisation of descendents of the men who fought for the Union during the war), Private Green’ s grave remains elusive.
He lived at Waterloo Cottage, North Marine Drive, Flamborough in 1947.
The group believes he may died in Flamborough, or the surrounding area, during this time – and would like anyone who has the details of where he is buried to get in touch.
A spokesperson said: “Our organisation, of which we are the only overseas branch, was founded in the United States in 1881 to ensure the preservation of the memory of the soldiers and sailors who fought to preserve the American Union and secure the abolition of slavery in America during the American Civil War.
“Our task is to find the graves of Union veterans in the UK, of which there are a surprisingly large number; we currently know of some 1,400 likely to be buried here, and have found 50% of their graves.
“A particularly important task committed to us is to identify, and commemorate, the grave of the last Veteran of that war who died in the UK.
“Our research leads us to believe that he was George M Green, born in Maine, USA. in 1845.
“He served in the 15th Maine Volunteers and would have been among the youngest soldiers to have served in that war.
“He seems to have been in England by 1921, when he claimed a Federal Veteran’s pension, and the last known account of him was a press report that he was living at Waterloo Cottage, North Marine Drive, Flamborough in 1947.
“The last mention of him is a statement in 1948 that his latest pension cheque had been returned uncashed, suggesting that he had died in either 1947 or 1948, aged 102 or 103.”
