Scarborough News reader Clare Archer, of Crossgates, recalled the former store, which is now part of the Brunswick development, renowned for its display department.

She said: "Its windows were second to none and attracted many onlookers, as did the store interior.

"This photo of the display department members was taken on the roof of the store in the late 1940s.

"I came across it during a cleaning session as I'm confined to the house."

On the photo are, back from left: Ernie Smith, Clive Preece, Norman Magson, Colin Nicholson; middle row: Miss Callander, Esme Coates; front row: D Day, P Kimberley, Maisie Scott, Peggy Horsman.
