Special deal from Halfords offers “almost free” roadworthiness test

Drivers whose vehicle is due an MOT in coming weeks can now secure a test for as little as £1 as part of a promotion being run by Halfords Autocentres.

The auto retailer and garage chain has announced a special deal that will see customers who buy any item at a Halfords store or via its website, entitled to claim a free MOT at any Halfords Autocentre or McConechys garage.

The offer runs from Thursday 25 March until 19 April and means that customers buying anything from a £1 plastic bucket to a £400 electric scooter will be able to claim the MOT, which usually costs £39.85, for free.

Customers who want to take advantage of the offer need to buy any item in store or online and provide their details. Seven days later, they will receive a voucher code via email which they can then redeem online for an MOT appointment at any Halfords Autocentre. The offer also allows drivers in Scotland to make an appointment at any of the 39 McConechys garages which have become part of the Halfords group.

Research by Halfords reveals that 84 per cent motorists have previously driven without a valid MoT, with more than half doing so for more than a week. The most common explanation drivers gave for driving without a valid MoT was forgetting to book in the test, cited by two thirds of motorists, followed by a third saying not being able to afford to take the test played a part.

Driving with a valid MOT can see motorists hit with a fine of up to £1,000.

Andy Randall, Halfords Autocentres managing director says: "It’s clear from our research that MoT tests are one of the biggest expenses that drivers face and this is one of the reasons we introduced this campaign in March, the busiest times for testing. It also coincides with the easing of lockdown restrictions. We would encourage anyone shopping at Halfords to take advantage of this offer as it will keep our roads safer, help drivers with their costs and means they can keep their cars on the road. The MoT test remains the best way to ensure vehicles are safe to drive.”
