McLaren has revealed the first details of its all-new supercar, due out in early 2021.
The McLaren Artura will be the British brand’s first series production hybrid supercar, using the knowledge gained in developing the P1 hyper car and limited edition Speedtail Hyper-GT hybrids.
The all-new model will be launched in the first half of 2021, using a brand-new platform, drivetrain and driver interface.
The Artura will see the introduction of a twin-turbo V6 petrol engine paired with an electric motor and battery system. McLaren has yet to reveal details of the hybrid system but says that the new drivetrain will offer the performance of its current V8 engines while being able to run in pure-electric mode and bring more torque at lower engine speeds.
The Artura is the first car to be built on the all-new McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture (MCLA), designed from the outset to accept electrified drivetrains and which will be built at the firm’s £50 million Composites Technology Centre in Sheffield. The platform has been developed to compensate for the added weight of the hybrid system, with increased use of weight-saving technology in the chassis and body.
Mike Flewitt, chief executive officer of McLaren Automotive, said: “Every element of the Artura is all-new – from the platform architecture and every part of the high-performance hybrid powertrain, to the exterior body, interior and cutting-edge driver interface – but it draws on decades of McLaren experience in pioneering super-lightweight race and road car technologies to bring all of our expertise in electrification to the supercar class.”
The Artura will slot into the McLaren range below the Super Series and is the first Sports Series car to use a model name instead of a number, replacing the 570S.
McLaren says the Artura is “the beginning of a new era”, ushering in the start of its Track 25 business plan, which aims to introduce 18 petrol-hybrid models by 2025.
