Scarborough Museums Trust supports children's arts project - and has 50 craft packs to give away

Arts Award Discover at Home started as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic, and has become a permanent part of the Arts Award offer. Developed to enable families to complete Arts Award Discover remotely, it provides inspiring ideas and information on how to gain Arts Award Discover certificates. The scheme is aimed at five to 11-year-olds, but older children will enjoy taking part, too.

Scarborough Museums Trust is hosting a new page on its website with video tutorials to help children and young people find out what to do and to give them lots of ideas for making art inspired by some of the amazing objects and artworks in the museum’s collections.

The Trust is also offering 50 bags full of free arts and craft materials for those taking part. The bag is designed by illustrator Savannah Storm and includes an Arts Award Discover logbook for recording and sharing work.

Christine Rostron, Learning Manager at Scarborough Museums Trust, said: “Arts Award Discover is easy to take part in at home and no special skills are needed, just enthusiasm for having a go at different art activities. We’re lucky to have some amazing artworks at our venues which have provided inspiration for a range of art and craft activities. Some are really simple and others will provide a bit of a challenge if you want to learn a new skill.”

Arts Award Discover is a nationally recognised qualification for young people managed by Trinity College London in collaboration with Arts Council England. All those taking part in the Scarborough scheme will receive a certificate from Scarborough Museums Trust as well as their Arts Award certificate from Trinity College.

Families can also join a live event to mark the launch of Arts Award Discover at Home. This workshop, from 10.30am to 11.15am on Saturday March 27, will be led by Kaitlin Ferguson, an artist whose work has an environmental focus, find out about Arts Award Discover and take part in some fun drawing activities. All you will need is a pencil and paper.

To claim a bag of arts and crafts materials, please call 01723 384500 from 10am to 5pm, Mondays to Fridays, to arrange to collect one from Woodend, on Scarborough’s The Crescent. They will be available to collect from Monday March 29.
