I rank Christmas 2025 supermarket adverts from best to worst - including Asda, Tesco and M&S Food

Adverts this year feature iconic characters and celebrities 🎄

  • Supermarket Christmas 2025 adverts have officially arrived
  • Adverts feature iconic characters and even some famous faces
  • I rank them the likes of Asda, Tesco and M&S food from best to worst

There are many things in life that mark the beginning of the festive season.

Whether it's opening our advent calendar, playing our favourite Christmas tunes, or spotting a brand-new Christmas advert on the television.

Christmas adverts have always brought me so much joy, and I look forward to seeing new ones each year.

As a food and drink writer (and huge fan of all things Christmas) I’ve always taken a personal interest in the supermarket’s take on the Christmas advert.

There are some adverts this year that are sure to go down as favourites, including appearances from the Grinch and The BFG.

Here is my ranking of the best to worst Christmas adverts from UK supermarkets.

Asda

Asda’s Christmas advert is by far my favourite of the year. That is because it includes my favourite Christmas character, the Grinch. It shows the Grinch shopping with his family, and not necessarily enjoying it. However, as he visits Asda he becomes more involved in the Christmas spirit. It ends with a man revealed without the Grinch make-up on. Its message that even the Grinch-iest of family members can enjoy Christmas is a heart-warming and fun way to do an advert.

Aldi

Of course the iconic Kevin the Carrot is back for Christmas at Aldi! This year, Kevin is getting married! The adorable advert features not only Kevin and his friends (including a hilarious bridal carrot) but a parody of a song by Wet Wet Wet that famously featured in Love Actually. Kevin the Carrot has become an unmistakable iconic character of Christmas, and Aldi’s adverts are always full of fun and laughs.

Sainsbury’s

Sainsbury’s is another supermarket bringing an absolutely brilliant advert to our television screens. Featuring children’s book and film character The BFG, the advert shows a Sainsbury's worker inviting him to Christmas dinner. It’s really moving and also hilarious, as we see The BFG enjoy his dinner from outside the window.

Waitrose

Kiera Knightley and Joe Wilkinson star in Waitrose’s Christmas 2025 advert ‘The Perfect Gift’, which parodies typical festive rom-coms. There is even reference to the iconic cue card scene in Love Actually, which Knightley actually stars. It’s a good laugh and may go down as one of the greats.

M&S Food

If there is one thing M&S Food adverts do well, it’s make you desperately want to eat its food. This year it shows Dawn French driving home, before a magical creature allows her into the M&S Food van in which she invites the rest of drivers and passengers for a festive feast. It’s fairly funny and very Christmassy.

Lidl

Lidl’s Christmas advert for 2025 is cute enough, with a young girl narrating how the UK feels during the Christmas season. It showcases many different people and families enjoying the festivities in different ways. Its main message is to promote its toy bank. Sadly though, it just didn’t get me in the feels as much as the others on this list.

Morrisons

Morrisons’s 2025 Christmas advert is named ‘A Year In The Making’, and shows a variety of people celebrating the festive season. It also shows how Morrisons’ food makes it from the supplier to your front door. It’s a little lost on me though.

Tesco

Tesco has had some excellent Christmas adverts over the years (who remembers the Spice Girls shopping for gifts for each other?) However, I’m not a massive fan of this one. It does show the hilarious reality of Christmas, including grown-up brothers arguing over a game of Pictionary - but it doesn’t stand out too much.
