Simon Lazenby explained that the couple always thought that they might move back to France at some stage, and are planning initially to spend time in the Cote d’Azur.

He said: “We’ve really enjoyed creating and running [the restaurant] but the best thing has been the people.

“We’re very thankful to everyone that supported us, our customers and local suppliers. We always said that people came as customers and left as friends.

"It’s been great.”

Lazenby's was one of only two restaurants in Yorkshire to be invited every year to the French Embassy in London to celebrate French gastronomy.

It established itself as a popular eating spot in town with its French cuisine, Mediterranean seafood platters and champagne brunches.

Throughout April and May they transformed their outdoor terrace into a Riviera inspired space to accommodate Covid-19 restrictions.

Simon and Valérie have sold the restaurant to new owners but do not yet know what their plans for the restaurant are.
