Scarborough Borough Councillor John Casey (Ind, Filey) said: “I’m very pleased that this event is coming to Filey. It will be a real boost for Filey, for people who live here, for visitors and for local businesses. It should be a good day out.”

Scarborough Council is working with Northern Kite Group, which organises other events including Bridlington Kite Festival, to bring the festival to Filey.

Scores of professional kite flyers are expected to attend as well as Oscar, the biggest teddy bear-shaped kite in the world.

The festival will be free to visit and will centre around a marked out arena for the fliers to launch their kites from.

There will be activities for children, including kite making, and refreshment traders will be invited to host stalls.

This year’s Bridlington Kite Festival, which usually takes place in May, has been rescheduled for September 11 and 12.
