Beaches to be dog-free zones for the summer

The ban, which is enforced by East Riding of Yorkshire Council each year, stops dogs from going on to the busiest areas which are popular with families.

The council said the move is brought to help visitors enjoy the seaside without being bothered by nuisance dogs or fouling.

It also helps with meeting the requirements for a Blue Flag, which shows the cleanest beaches around the UK.

Dog-free zones will run until September 30 between the North Pier and Limekiln Lane and from the South Pier to Kingston Road. On the promenades next to these areas, dogs must be kept on leads.

Cllr Shaun Horton, the council’s portfolio holder for community involvement and local partnerships, said: “The exclusion on dogs using certain areas of the beach lasts just for the summer season.

“The vast majority of owners know the importance of not taking their dogs on the beach in the summer months when children and families are playing in the sand.”

“But there are plenty of other areas on the beaches where dogs are still welcome.”

The council has warned that officers will carry out regular patrols of the beaches and promenades and any owner found breaking the rules will receive a £75 fixed penalty notice.

Last year, three were handed out in the county.
