The White Horse pub has been closed for almost a year and now four Flamborough residents have taken it upon themselves to start pulling pints behind the bar.

Arthur and Phyl Woodhouse have joined forces with Andrew and Steph Artley to become the White Horse’s new licensees.

Arthur, 60, who used to own a newsagents in Flamborough, said: “I just got a call from Andrew asking if I fancied joining him on his new venture and I couldn’t resist. We are very much looking forward to opening and serving the people of Bempton and Buckton as well as any visitors to the village.”

The foursome have big plans for the White Horse after recruiting Steve Dixon, former chef at The Old Ship Inn on St John’s Street, Bridlington, to work in the kitchen where he will rustle up traditional bar meals and Sunday lunches.

The team also want to get the village interacting by creating a dominoes team, darts team and have a weekly quiz.

Andrew is a joiner and he was employed by the owners to renovate the pub and it is this that encouraged him to take the pub on. Andrew and Steph are now living at the White Horse while Arthur and Phyl commute from their home in Water Lane, Flamborough.

“The pub is the village’s so we’re just excited to be running it for them,” said Arthur. “It has been a while without a pub and it will be a great boost to get the White Horse up and running again.”

Bempton resident Alan McLean said: “The villagers are very pleased about local people taking over the running of the White Horse. It has been sorely missed as it is the real heart of the village so it is an exciting time.”
