John Heald was wanted in connection with the death of Bei Carter, 49, who was found dead with a single stab wound at the Morayland Hotel late on Friday, July 18.

The 53-year-old, who is also wanted following a serious sexual assault in Sheffield, was thought to have been staying at the guest house before Ms Carter was killed.

He was found and arrested in Parkgate, Rotherham, at 2.15pm today and is now in police custody.

South Yorkshire Police said in a statement: “South Yorkshire Police and Humberside Police would like to thank the public for their support throughout this investigation.”

Since Heald went on the run 150 officers have been deployed to track him down in South Yorkshire, and police have received more than 250 calls and potential sightings.

Charity Crimestoppers had already put up a reward of £5,000 for information that leads to his arrest, but this was doubled to £10,000 after a contribution by South Yorkshire police and crime commissioner Shaun Wright.

Police yesterday released a CCTV image of Heald taken at a bargain store in Mexborough in a bid to track him down.
