'This business is the only source of income for me' - shopkeeper's plea after burglar targets Costcutter shop on Ramshill Road, Scarborough

A Scarborough shopkeeper is appealing for help from members of the public after his business was targeted by a burglar.

Shafaullah Niazi owns the Costcutter store on Ramshill Road which was broken into around 3.50am on Sunday January 12.

The suspect entered the premises smashing the main glass door and stole cigarettes to the value of almost £10,000, Shafaullah said.

"Police reached the crime scene in 5-7 minutes but they managed to escape.

"I am a local shopkeeper and I cannot afford that big loss. This business is the only source of income for me and I do not have any family support."

Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident.

A spokesperson from North Yorkshire Police said: "Police are investigating a burglary at the Costcutter shop on Ramshill Road in Scarborough which occurred at around 3.50am on Sunday (12 Jan 2020).

"A suspect wearing a ski-type mask smashed through the front door before making off with cigarettes.

"Police attended the burglary-in-progress report and carried out an area search.

"Detailed neighbourhood, forensics and CCTV enquiries are ongoing to help identify the suspect.

"Witnesses or anyone with information that could assist the investigation are asked to call North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 1, and speak to the Force Control Room. Please quote reference number 12200006364."
