Police say that although the male, who is in his 50s and from the York area, is no longer in custody, proceedings in the case - as they relate to him - remain active.

The suspect was initially taken into custody and interviewed by detectives from the Major Crime Unit on Monday March 23, before being bailed earlier today (Tuesday March 24).

Detective Superintendent Dai Malyn, head of North Yorkshire Police’s Major Crime Unit, said: “Even though the man has been released on bail, I must ask that the media and public make no attempt to identify him, his place of work or his home address.

“Publishing this man’s identity could cause serious harm to my investigation.”

Miss Lawrence was last seen at about 3pm on March 18, 2009, as she made her way home from work at York University and was reported missing by her father two days later.

This is the second time that someone has been arrested on suspicion of her murder.

After the case lay largely dormant for several years, police sensationally announced last May that they’d arrested a 59-year-old male from the York area on suspicion of killing the chef.

A 46-year-old man was arrested last July on suspicion of perverting the course of justice, and he remains on police bail.

However since those developments last summer, there had been little movement with the case.

That was until a Major Crime Unit operation was carried out on February 25 and an arrest made earlier this week.
