The location is the site of a significant number of previous collisions, and has a speed limit of 70mph.

The driver pleaded guilty to speeding. At Harrogate Magistrates Court last week he was ordered to pay fines and costs totalling £1,551, and given six penalty points.

After the hearing, Richard Fletcher, North Yorkshire Police spokesperson, said: "Speed limits are set for a reason and exceeding them is illegal.

"We expect motorists to drive responsibly and resist driving at extreme speeds - the impact of doing so can be devastating."
