Both Scarborough lifeboats launched after lights spotted near Hayburn Wyke

Volunteer crews launched both the inshore and all‑weather lifeboats after reports of lights spotted near Hayburn Wyke on Sunday (December 28)

The call came at 6.01pm following a training exercise earlier in the day which involved both the D‑class John Wesley Hillard IV and the all‑weather lifeboat Frederick William Plaxton.

Crews carried out a thorough search along the shoreline and cliffs in some pretty challenging conditions — dark skies, choppy waves, and a good two‑metre swell.

A spokesperson for Scarborough RNLI said: “Thankfully, after completing the full area search, nothing was found.

"After being stood down by HM Coastguard, the boats returned to station, were washed down, and made ready for service by 9.30pm.”
