Cold-callers claiming to be ex-offenders targeting Castleton near Whitby

North Yorkshire Police has received reports of males claiming to be ex-offenders targeting rural villages, such as Castleton, for cold-calling activity.

Reports of this activity often come from areas with a higher proportion of vulnerable elderly residents, suggesting these areas may be deliberately targeted.

Concerns have also been raised regarding possible additional motives as these individuals move through villages and sometimes enter homes.

PCSO Luke Aaron said: “They appear to be going door-to-door, telling residents they are ex-offenders on a “rehabilitation scheme.”

“This is false—no such scheme exists in this area. It has also been noted that some individuals may produce ID cards or lanyards to support this false claim.

“This story can pressure residents into feeling obliged to support them in their supposed “rehabilitation.”

“To do this, they will likely ask - with persistence - for help in meeting a sales quota by selling household goods such as dusters, windscreen scrapers, cloths and more at an inflated cost.

“We advise all residents to avoid opening the door to such strangers.

“If you do engage in conversation and they claim to be "ex-offenders or ex-prisoners", feel confident in ending the conversation and report the incident to us on 101 and contact Action Fraud for more advice.”

North Yorkshire Police offer the following advice to help deter cold-callers:

Consider installing CCTV to help safeguard your property – many doorbell cameras allow you to see who is at your door on your phone, before opening it.

Never allow strangers or doorstep sellers into your home.

Spread this message if you live in rural areas or villages in North Yorkshire.

Check-in with any vulnerable neighbours.

Free “No Cold Caller” signs will be available to collect from the CO-OP shop in Castleton, in the next few days.

Seasonal Tip: Reconsider the security of any parcels being left around your house in the lead up to Christmas and the holiday season.
