Fury as thousands of pounds of horse riding equipment used by autistic children is stolen in Scarborough

Members of Autism Angels were taking part in a 500-mile fund-raising trek when the tack – including specialist saddles which alone cost thousands of pounds – were taken.

But a kindly businessman who was appalled by the theft has stepped in to help - and is appealing to the business community to do likewise.

Mark Kennedy, the managing director of YRC Resin Drives of Distinction, has donated £100 to the Harrogate-based charity and set up a Just Giving page in the hope that other businesses will follow suit.

Mr Kennedy said: “I was utterly appalled when I read about the theft.

"This is a volunteer-based charity helping autistic children, and I simply had to do something to help them in their hour of need.

“We can’t let a criminal minority within our communities disrupt the efforts of people doing selfless, great deeds.

"I’m asking the Harrogate business community to rally together and help replace the kit that was stolen.

“If a number of businesses donate just £100, the charity will be able to replace the equipment quickly.”

Autism Angels founder Sarah Kekoa said: “I’d like to say a huge thank you to Mark at YRC for his support.

"It has restored our faith in human nature.

"The sad fact is because we can’t afford to replace the kit autistic children we support are missing out on their riding.”
