The driver left the scene of the accident on Stepney Road, but was picked up a short while later at the top of the hill.

After blowing 79 on the roadside alcohol breathalyser, he was taken into custody.

The driver, a 39-year-old man from West Ayton appeared in court earlier this month after being reported for driving when alcohol is above the limit, failing to stop after an accident and failing to stop for police.

He has been disqualified from driving for 14 months - which could be reduced by 14 weeks upon the successful completion of a course.

He has also been fined a total of £757.

He is required to pay court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £303.
