John William Curtis, of no fixed abode in Bridlington, was served a Criminal Behaviour Order on Wednesday, October 8 at Beverley Magistrates Court.

Following complaints from councillors and the police, East Riding of Yorkshire Council officers brought Mr Curtis before the court for a breach of a Community Protection Notice (CPN).

The CPN had been issued to him for continuing to drink alcohol and associate with others who were drinking. which was part of his notice.

Mr Curtis had taken no notice of the chances or advice that has been given to him, leaving East Riding Council no choice but to pursue formal action, working in partnership with Humberside Police. Consequently, he received a £80 fine and a Criminal Behavioural Order.

The order, in force for two years, prohibits Mr Curtis from entering the area known as Ebor Gardens, or any Public Space Protection Order area within Bridlington with any alcohol open or sealed, as per the PSPO 2025 variation document.

A breach of a criminal behaviour order is a criminal offence and on summary conviction in magistrates court can lead to a term of imprisonment of up to six months, an unlimited fine or both. On indictment, in the crown court, it can lead to a prison term of up to five years, an unlimited fine or both.

Nigel Brignall, manager of the anti-social behaviour team at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “This Criminal Behaviour Order sends a clear message that we take proactive steps to protect communities and tackle antisocial behaviour. We always try and help people, but if they not engage with us, we will take decisive action. We’re dedicated to ensuring that the East Riding is a good place to live, and taking firm action against those engaging in disruptive street drinking.”

Partners continue to work together, including enforcing the Public Spaces Protection Order, and there has been a targeted focus this year in this area, which forms part of the Clear Hold Build project in Bridlington
