North Yorkshire Police chase ends with drink-driver arrest near Malton

At around 9.30pm last night (Tuesday, October 27), North Yorkshire Police received a report that a ‘heavily intoxicated’ man had been refused entry to an event near Malton before getting into a vehicle and driving away.

Officers located the vehicle a short time later and observed it being driven erratically, before the driver began using minor roads in an attempt to get away.

When officers signalled for the vehicle to stop, it failed to do so and made off. A stinger was quickly deployed, deflating all four tyres, and safely bringing the pursuit to an end.

The driver appeared intoxicated and failed to provide a roadside breath specimen when asked to so.

He was arrested and taken into custody, and the vehicle was recovered.

Once in custody, he provided evidential samples which showed he was nearly three times the legal drink-drive limit.

He has since been charged with driving over the prescribed alcohol limit and is due to appear in court.

A police spokesperson said: “Drink and drug driving remains one of the Fatal Five offences that contribute to the most serious collisions on our roads, alongside speeding, careless driving, not wearing a seatbelt and using a mobile phone at the wheel.

“We are absolutely committed to making North Yorkshire's roads safer by relentlessly pursuing those who put others at risk by driving under the influence of drink or drugs.

“Our officers see first-hand the devastating consequences of these entirely preventable offences and will continue to take robust action against offenders.

“Thank you to the member of the public who contacted us.

“If you suspect someone is driving under the influence of drink or drugs, please call 999 and report it immediately.”
