Partnership effort continues to tackle retail crime in Scarborough town centre this Christmas

As part of Scarborough Police’s ‘Operation Snowstorm’ over the festive period, officers are working closely with the Scarborough Anti-Theft Group to detect and deter retail crime while enhancing safety for shop workers and Christmas shoppers alike.

Officers and PCSOs are carrying out dedicated patrols in the town centre where they are actively looking out for suspected shoplifters and known criminals.

This effort is supported by the information-sharing Shop Watch scheme, North Yorkshire Council’s CCTV operators, and North Yorkshire Police’s Force Intelligence Bureau who help track suspicious individuals and vehicles operating in the Scarborough area.

They are also working closely with British Transport Police to target travelling criminals who use the train network.

Sergeant Jon Dillon, from the Scarborough Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We focus on retail crime all year round, but it is a particular issue in the run up to Christmas when it can have a significant financial impact on our retailers.

“Through our partnership with the Scarborough Anti-Theft Group, we are sending out the message that retail crime will not be tolerated this Christmas.

“Our policing team is providing a visible and reassuring presence to support retailers, preventing criminal activity, and helping people to enjoy the festivities in a safe, secure and family-friendly environment.”

Police are urging people to report suspected retail crime as soon as possible.

Dial 999 to ensure a quick response in an emergency or to report suspicious activity or someone selling goods that are believed to have been stolen, make a report via the North Yorkshire Police website or call 101.

Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or make an online report.
