Police issue urgent 'Porch Pirates' warning to Scarborough and Filey residents

North Yorkshire Police have put out an urgent warning for residents in Scarborough and Filey following reports of a man knocking on doors claiming to be from Amazon.

Officers are advising residents to be on their guard against door-step callers asking where delivery drivers can leave parcels.

Scarborough Police have received reports of a man driving a blue van calling at homes claiming to be from Amazon and asking where parcels are usually left.

Thieves, dubbed 'porch pirates', will then return at a later date to try and steal packages that you have had delivered.

North Yorkshire Police say you should not engage with any callers in these circumstances and to not pass on any information.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said: "If you have any doubt about who is calling at your door, especially if you are not expecting them, don’t answer it.

"If you ever feel threatened by a caller at your door, always call 999."
