John-Paul Zegstroo, 27, appeared at York Crown Court on Thursday when he pleaded not guilty to eight separate charges relating to the alleged abuse of the child.

Zegstroo, of Overdale Gardens, Eastfield, is charged with two counts of raping a child under 13 years of age between December 2018 and March 2020.

He is also accused of sexually assaulting the youngster between the same dates, and three counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity between October 2019 and March 2020.

He also denies two counts of taking indecent photos of the child, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

Following Zegstroo’s not-guilty pleas to all charges, judge Simon Hickey adjourned the case to December 16, when the defendant will face trial by jury.

Zegstroo was bailed until that date.
