Six people were fined in Whitby for breaching coronavirus regulations.

The town’s police force gave the update prior to last night's announcement from the Prime Minister, as it had warned people to adhere to advice not to make journeys that were not essential.

In a post on its Facebook page, the force said: “Whitby Neighbourhood Policing team have issued six fines to six adults who did not have a reasonable excuse to travel to Whitby from their home towns.

“A massive thanks from us all to those still adhering to the guidelines in an effort to keep us all safe.”

The police action came at the end of a week which saw bikers fined from travelling over from Rochdale to Whitby for fish and chips, while a couple from Boston Spa, near Wetherby, also fell foul of guidelines for heading to Whitby "to smell the sea."
