Stabbing sparks review into Scarborough pub

A Scarborough pub is facing a battle to save its licence after police called for a review following a stabbing at the premises.

North Yorkshire Police has submitted a licence review application to Scarborough Council against the West Riding Hotel in Castle Road.

Last month a man was stabbed in following an altercation in the pub.

In the review, it states: “Over the last 12 months licensing officers from both North Yorkshire Police and Scarborough Borough Council have spent a considerable amount of time and effort working with the Premises Licence Holder (PLH), Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS) and management at the premises to address issues in relation to:

• Alleged drug use

• Violent Crime

• Anti-social behaviour and nuisance in the outside area of the premises

• Breaches of the Premises Licence conditions.

“On January 21 a male was stabbed after an altercation inside the premises.

“Due to the continuing issues the police see no alternative but to instigate formal review proceedings to enable the Licensing Authority to deal with the matter at the earliest opportunity.”

The council's licensing committee has the power to suspend or strip the pub of its alcohol licence.

Consultation on the application will continue through until March before the committee meets to make its decision.
