Woman who was four times the drink-drive limit near Scarborough is spared a jail sentence

Rachael Hughes, 43, was given a suspended sentence and banned from driving for five years.

Hughes, of Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire, appeared before magistrates on December 23.

She admitted driving on the B1249 at Foxholes after consuming so much alcohol that the proportion was 152 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

The court heard that she tried to evade responsibility by giving false details to the police, and has a previous conviction.

But the magistrates were satisfied that there was a prospect of rehabilitation because she was trying to address her drink problem.

Hughes was given a jail sentence of 16 weeks suspended for 18 months, and also placed under electronically monitored curfew for 16 weeks and given a rehabilitation activity requirement.

She was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £122 and prosecution costs of £85.

Magistrates can impose a jail sentence of up to six months for drink-drive offences.
