Diamond couple celebrate their landmark anniversary

A Scarborough couple are today (Thursday 4 February) marking a milestone anniversary.

Dot and George Preston are celebrating their diamond anniversary.

The couple said that the secret to a happy marriage is ‘tolerance and a good sense of humour’.

Dot moved from Newcastle to Darlington at the age of two at the beginning of the Second World War to be with the rest of her family.

George was born in Knaresborough and worked on the railway until his National Service and upon his return was transferred to Darlington.

They first met at the Darlington YMCA youth club playing table tennis.

They married in 1956 at St Hilda’s Church just across from the YMCA.

Dot and George have four children, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

In 1978 they moved with the family to Scarborough.

George transferred with the railway and worked as a driver until his retirement.

Dot worked at the Clifton Hotel until the age of 75 when she finally retired.

Dot and George can be found nearly every day at the Indoor Bowls Centre, where they are members giving them a full active and social life.

All the pwopular couple’s family and friends wished them continued happiness for the future.
