Driver, 27, banned moments after course

Louis Goodison celebrated finishing the first day of the course with a bevvy but was nicked when officers noticed his erratic driving in Foreshore Road.

He has now been handed a four-year driving ban after he was caught on February 6 after leaving the course – which was ironically aimed at  slashing the length of his original suspension.

When pulled over in his partner’s Toyota Yaris he instantly admitted he had been drinking and that he was currently disqualified.

“He regrets his actions a great deal,” said Sajid Majeed, mitigating.

The 27-year-old was banned in 2014, and took the voluntary course to try and reduce the length of the suspension.

Scarborough Magistrates’ Court heard that Goodison, of Kentmere Avenue in Leeds, still has not completed the course as he was nicked after just the first of what has to be several classes.

He pleaded guilty to four charges at Monday’s hearing, including driving while over the limit and driving whilst disqualified.

His brief said his client had opted to drive while banned even though his pregnant partner had driven him the 70 miles to the coast.

However the solicitor claimed Goodison  equally confessed to his crimes.

He added: “He was candid in relation as to when he was behind the wheel.

“He tells me that he takes the court orders seriously and says that this was a stupid mistake and one that he won’t be repeating.

“He is sorry for what happened.”

The court heard that Goodison, who was supported in court by two women, has several children to different women.

However with another child on the way, he is back working, earning £300 a week for 12-hour shifts for Creative Print.

The court heard that  Goodison had a problem with drink and that contributed to his offending, which included a violent incident at a takeaway in 2014.

A breath test revealed he had 43 micrograms of alcohol in his system when arrested.

The legal limit is 35.

Suited Goodison arrived in court with a large bag, and one of his supporters wept after the bench told him he would serve time for the offence.

“You were told it was a  serious matter and one that you could go in to custody,” said the bench.

“You will serve a term of custody for a period of 18 weeks.

“We are, however, prepared to suspend it for a period of two years.”

Goodison will have to complete 100 hours of unpaid work and pay £165 in costs and charges.

He must re-sit his driving test before he can get his licence back in 2020, before being told: “You won’t be surprised to know that you are not being offered the drink drive rehabilitation course again.”

Leaving court, Goodison said: “I’ve had enough of  Scarborough.”
