Bridlington and Scarborough fire crews tackle road collisions and campervan fire over Bank Holiday weekend

Firefighters and emergency services were called to a range of incidents across Bridlington and Scarborough over the Bank Holiday weekend, including a vehicle fire, road traffic collisions and a pavement safety concern.

In Bridlington, Humberside Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) attended Royal Princes Parade at 6.02pm on Monday, May 25, after reports of raised paving outside a local business. Firefighters used gas detection equipment and a thermal imaging camera to inspect the area after concerns the movement could be linked to a gas or heat-related issue.

No gas readings or heat sources were detected, with crews later determining the pavement had lifted due to warm weather and a lack of expansion joints beneath the surface. Firefighters used a sledgehammer and hand tools to gain better access before cordoning off the area. The incident was left with the business owner while awaiting attendance from council and highways.

Earlier that day, at 1.29pm, HFRS were called to Elma Villas in Bridlington after a small fire broke out inside a microwave at a domestic property. The appliance was removed from the house by crews and taken outside. An inspection confirmed there was no fire or smoke damage to the home, and safety advice was given to the occupants.

On Sunday afternoon, crews tackled a campervan fire on Bessingby Way, Bridlington. Firefighters used a hose reel jet, breathing apparatus and a thermal imaging camera to bring the blaze under control. The vehicle was then left with the owner.

Meanwhile, in Scarborough, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (NYFRS) attended several road traffic collisions over the weekend.

At 1.08pm on Saturday, May 22, crews from Scarborough responded to a collision on Seamer Road. All occupants had exited the vehicles before firefighters arrived, and crews worked to make the scene safe before handing the incident over to police.

Just over 30 minutes later, another two-vehicle collision occurred on Burniston Road. Again, all occupants were out of the vehicles when firefighters arrived, and the scene was made safe.

Later that evening, at 6.03pm, crews extinguished a small fire involving a plastic waste bin in the open on Barwick Terrace, Scarborough. A bucket of water was used to put out the blaze, which was believed to have been caused accidentally by a discarded light or smoking material.

At 6:11am on Sunday, May 24, NYFRS were called to Northway, Scarborough, following a single-vehicle collision in which a car struck traffic lights. Crews disconnected the vehicle’s battery, dealt with a fuel leak and ensured the area was safe before leaving the scene.
