Some of our old buildings echo the great days of the town as a resort that stood out from the rest. Of course, we still are a great resort (and place to live), we still attract tens of thousands of visitors, and misty-eyed nostalgia shouldn't stand in the way of progress. We have, for example, an excellent sports village that has replaced the old facilities. There are proposals to build flats for students and NHS staff on the site of the old Argos building. But those old buildings blight the landscape. These photos don't include the many derelict commercial properties around town. The pandemic notwithstanding, progress is painfully slow. You can see great memories of the indoor pool HERE.

9. Echoes of the past
The new sports village meant the end of the much-loved indoor pool, which closed in June 2017. The pool is another part of the Sands development jigsaw, and demolition has been earmarked.

10. Echoes of the past
The windmill site on the seafront hasn't had the same attention as its much bigger near-neighbour, the land where the Futurist stood. It's been like this for decades.

11. Echoes of the past
Like the indoor pool, the Filey Road sports centre closed in 2017 as the sports village at Weaponness opened. There were proposals, later withdrawn, for the centre, which still stands derelict.

12. Echoes of the past
The Filey Road centre included grass tennis courts, seen to the right, which hosted the likes of Fred Perry and Davis Cup ties some 70 years ago.
