Hannah and Matthew Leckonby have launched Angilou Genuine French Furniture from a bespoke showroom within the lavish grounds of Octon Manor, Thwing.

A dedicated workshop annexe is also located within old barns on site, which the couple have renovated over the past year.

The couple and their family lived near Perpignan in France for six years, running a holiday cottages business, and over that time grew to love and appreciate the elegance of craftsmanship of French style.

“Our focus and passion is for genuine antique French furniture, “ said Hannah. “We go back regularly to France to buy new stock.

“We source all our finds from flea markets, French auction houses and from several contacts found during our almost seven years of living and working in the south of France.

“We renovate the majority of our pieces to new and take individual client commissions on selected items,” she explained.

Although the couple focus mainly on furniture, their aim is to also source a wide range of general antiques, from the decorative to the quirky.

“We never buy anything that we don’t like, “ said Hannah. “It about appealing to as many people as possible.”

“So we also buy vintage and retro items that catch our eye and that we believe will add interesting additions to any home.

“We also renovate and transform furniture, giving once forgotten pieces a new lease of life that can hopefully be enjoyed by generations to follow.”

It is this aspect of the business which has given Hannah her focus as many of her clients now seek items of tradition style which have been refreshed for the modern age.

Hannah is a specialist in re-upholstery and spent two years working as a “Girl Friday” alongside time served experts in the UK and France in a bid to learn the craft of bringing new life to time-worn antiques.

“When I cam back to the UK I phoned all the upholstery shops within a 20 mile radius to ask if I could work with them.

“So for a year I worked every Friday free of charge in Scarborough with two old guys.”

Now Hannah takes individual commissions, including leather work, while also taking on work from clients who own estates across East Yorkshire.

The couple are also happy to sell to the trade.
