I write in response to Professor John MacFie’s letter in the Scarborough News edition of Thursday July 12, ‘Future viability of hospital is in doubt’
Professor MacFie is someone for whom I have the greatest respect and who I worked alongside until his retirement in May 2017, however his memory of recent events clearly differs from mine. To suggest that 10 years ago Scarborough Hospital’s services were the envy of others both locally and nationally is somewhat at odds with the Care Quality Commission’s view at that time, whose 2010 report found the Trust to be compliant with only one of the 16 essential standards for quality and safety, and raised serious concerns. A number of services which were under threat pre-merger are now sustainable because York clinicians have been prepared to travel to Scarborough to provide them.
Many challenges remain but the Board of York Foundation Trust is committed to Scarborough having a thriving emergency department with all of the services necessary to support it. Our only aim is to make sure we can end any doubt over the future viability of Scarborough Hospital.
