Letter: Blitz photos of town are a valuable resource
The Scarborough News article on the March 18 1941 blitz was most interesting, as my maternal grandfather ex CSM James Metcalf was serving in the Auxiliary Fire Service Scarborough at the time and actually drove my very pregnant mother through the blitz to hospital, where I was born the following day.
However the damage to Potter Lane and the Old Town shown in the photographs was inflicted by a land mine dropped from a German aircraft on October 10, 1940, at just after 9pm and not by the later 1941 blitz. These photographs and many others from the Les Day collection can be seen at the Scarborough Maritime Heritage Centre in Eastborough and are a valuable record of our local history.
