Letter had misleading facts and figures about local retail
Re the recent letter '˜Local traders: the real retail disaster' (June 14). A simple check online would show that in the period 1975-1985 80,000 companies in the UK went bankrupt (far less than in the last 10 years).
I used www.tradingeconomics.com to check this after common sense suggested a million, as suggested in the letter, to be excessive.
I know that there is more than one butcher in Scarborough: Nockels, Market Hall; Spence, Dean Road; Horsley, Falsgrave; Stepney Hill Farm, Ramshill; Horsley, Victoria Road.
Another quick check online would show a much longer list of bakers in York than the claimed “two out of town”.
