Letter: Outflow site still poses hazard to visitors at Hunmanby Gap

It is almost a year since residents raised concerns about the disgraceful state of Hunmanby Gap, as featured in your paper. Since then nothing has been done about the huge hole around the outflow pipe which now constitutes a serious hazard to visitors.

Some action has at least been taken with regard to the toilets which have been closed since last year. They were removed entirely before Christmas! I was therefore somewhat bemused and confused to read in last week’s paper that “assurances have once again been given that public toilets will be reinstated at Hunmanby Gap”.

At the same time it appears that they are to be offered for sale, although all that remains is a concrete base on an unstable cliff top site.

Who is likely to invest in this ‘business opportunity’ - and when?

Hunmanby Gap is indeed a very popular beach with both locals and visitors to the area, even in the winter months when the car park is closed. Recently there have been up to 50 vehicles parked on the roadside offering further a further hazard to families and dog walkers accessing the beach via the footpath. It is not made clear that the road should be used only for vehicular access to the cafe and holiday homes where parking and turning space is very limited.

It seems unlikely that the situation will improve before the season starts again at Easter. What sort of impression will this give to the visitors on whom so many local businesses depend?
