Just after 7.30pm, Humber Coastguard requested the launch of Filey inshore lifeboat,, Braund, to reports of a person over the cliffs at Yons Nab - just a few hundred metres from the place where a teenage girl had survived a fall just five weeks ago.

With the assistance of local Coast Rescue Teams, the ILB crew found the person just 20 feet from the bottom of the cliffs.

In a prolonged and difficult evacuation, the male was taken to the bottom of the cliffs, across rocks and onto the beach back to the inshore lifeboat and transferred to Coble Landing, Filey.

Barry Robson, lifeboat coxswain, said: “Both the ILB crew and the Coast Rescue Teams acted in a very professional manner in the evacuation of the gentleman.

"I would like to congratulate them on the way that they handled the situation.

"Our thoughts go out to the family at this sad time.”

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police: "Officers believe there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and will prepare a report for the coroner.

"We are not in a position to identify the man but believe he is from the Scarborough area and is aged in his 50s."
