At East Riding Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 30 July, Mr Heald spoke only to confirm his name and address.

District Judge Frederick Rutherford remanded Mr Heald in custody to appear at Hull Crown Court on Friday 1 August.

Adrienne Gower, senior district crown prosecutor, CPS Yorkshire and Humberside, said: “The Crown Prosecution Service has been working closely with Humberside Police in connection with this case.

“Having carefully considered all of the evidence presented to us, we have concluded that there is sufficient evidence to charge John Heald with 10 offences of rape in South Yorkshire on 13 July 2014 and the murder of Bei Carter in Bridlington on 18 July 2014.

“This defendant now stands charged with serious criminal offences and has the right to a fair trial.”
