Man smashes window during Scarborough drinking session

A man smashed a shop window by jumping into it during a boozy session in Scarborough.

Michael Nelson, 23, of Esplanade, was seen on CCTV bouncing off the glass until it shattered at a retail premises in Newborough on the night of October 14 last year.

Katy Varlow, prosecuting, said: “He had been drinking with his brother and was drunk. The owner of the retail premises had to pay a total of £200 to repair the damage.”

Nelson pleaded guilty to one count of criminal damage at Scarborough Magistrates’ Court on February 9.
Shaun Greenan, mitigating, said: “He is apologetic and has expressed remorse. It was a deliberate attempt and he accepts that he is due to pay compensation. He is not in employment but he has settled down. This is an isolated incident of stupidity.”
Mr Barnett, chairman of the bench, said: “It was a stupid thing you did and now you are going to pay the price. It was a reckless act and you will be punished.”
He handed Nelson a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay £200 compensation, £85 in costs and a £20 surcharge.
