New home for cardio unit at Scarborough Hospital

The Unit was officially opened by Sue Symington, Chair of York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

An 18-month project has transformed former offices into a modern clinical unit which provides a purpose-built environment to deliver diagnostic tests and therapies for patients with heart and lung disorders.

The completed Cardio-Respiratory Unit now boasts purpose built heart scanning rooms, a clinical exercise laboratory, pacemaker and consultation rooms.

The project was made possible thanks to funding of £50,000 from York Teaching Hospital Charity and Scarborough League of Friends who donated £10,000. It will benefit over 9,500 patients a year. The work was done completely inhouse by the Trust’s Estates and Facilities Team.

Sue Symington, Chair of York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, said: “The unit was established in the 1990s when the need for a specialist care was first recognised. Since then the demand for specialist care has grown year-on-year with the development of new techniques and an increasing number of patients requiring access to them.

“The Trust recognised that a new purpose built unit was needed to enable us to continue to deliver high quality care and to meet the demands of today’s healthcare service and I am delighted to officially open this fantastic facility today.

“The new unit provides a much improved experience for patients and relatives attending the department as well as for staff delivering the care, enabling them to provide treatment in a comfortable and spacious environment with improved privacy and dignity.

“On behalf of the Trust I would like to thank the Scarborough Hospital League of Friends and York Teaching Hospital Charity supporters for providing some of the funding to help make this project happen.”

Modernisation of the Scarborough Hospital cardiac respiratory diagnostic services are in line with NHS England and the Academy of Healthcare Sciences national developments.
