LEE DOUGLAS: Guys took Hullensians too lightly

We really did have to dig deep to get the win at Hullensians on Saturday.

I think some of our guys went there expecting to turn them over without much of a fight, but you can never go to Hullensians and roll them over easily. They’re a tough unit, especially at home, and perhaps some of our guys read too much into the rumours that they were struggling for a side.Having said that, last season we’d have bombed it in that game.We didn’t play well and came away with the win, regardless of whether the scoreline fairly reflected the game.I felt we had so many more gears to go up on the day, and they just about did all they could. What impressed me the most on Saturday was the performances of our younger players.Aaron Wilson and Ben Martin will get the column inches after scoring tries, but the performance of young 17-year-old Joe Holliday.Joe had a fantastic game and did everything we asked of him. It’s great to see a new crop of young players coming in and pushing for first-team selection. They are what the club is about and make this job more worthwhile. The club are starting to see the benefits of the youth set-up and excellent facilities at Silver Royd.We now go into a huge couple of weeks for our season to finish off 2016.Everyone seems to be talking about the big derby against Bridlington next Saturday, but we have a big game at York on Saturday. The guys really can’t look past this weekend’s game or we won’t get the result we want or need to stay in the promotion hunt.Every time you play the teams in and around you in this league, you really have to be on your game.If you’re not, you’ll come a cropper.York will undoubtedly be a tough game and we’ll need to be better than we were at Hullensians if we’re going to go there and win.
