Letter: Play a part in group's future to save the area

Like all towns and cities, the fortunes of Scarborough have ebbed and flowed. But there has been one constant: for more than 50 years, Scarborough and District Civic Society has been there, talking to council officials, property owners and developers to try to improve the appearance and facilities of the town.

Civic Society needs your help.
Civic Society needs your help.

But we don’t just talk. As well as providing a forum for discussion and debate, the society has also delivered a number of successful projects which still benefit both the people of Scarborough and visitors to the town.

All this has been achieved by a dynamic and forward-looking committee made up of volunteers who receive no payment for their efforts.

Why do we do this? Because we care about Scarborough. But we couldn’t do what we do without the ongoing support of our members and supporters who provide us with the income to cover our costs.

However, successful as we are, like any other organisation, we sometimes need to pause for breath and think about the future.

Not just the future of Scarborough, but also the future of the society itself.

We may well have been a consistent and enduring voice of the community for over half a century, but how do we ensure that the society stays around to then next 50 years?

This is where we need your help.

Can you help us develop a vision for what Scarborough will look like in the years to come? Can you help lead the society as it shapes up to face the challenges ahead?

We’re looking for members. As a membership organisation, we always welcome new members, young and old.

We value the financial support that our members provide but also the contribution they can make to our discussions and by turning up for our events.

Once your membership subscription is paid, how much you do and how frequently you attend our events is up to you – but we hope you will want to get involved.

We also welcome new membership applications from local businesses.

We’re looking for new committee members.

As a registered charity (260615) our committee members are trustees of the charity and we are always on the lookout for new committee members who can contribute time and effort to helping to run the society.

The commitment is not huge – but you will need to be able to devote a few hours a month and will need access to email.

We’re looking for a new chairman. Do you have the qualities to lead a modern civic society? If so, we’d like to hear from you.

We’re actively seeking someone who has the flair and passion to help build the society into a dynamic and influential force for good in helping to shape the future of our town. We’re holding a special event at The Street (off Dean Road) on the evening of Wednesday, November 29, when writer, speaker and civic society expert Kevin Trickett will be entertaining us with his passion for life and his insights into what makes a great civic society.

Irreverent and slightly tongue in cheek, Kevin will set out to inspire you to share his view that civic societies matter.

Are you ready to accept his challenge and help secure the future of Scarborough and District Civic Society?

The event will start at 7pm and is free to attend. There’s even free tea, coffee and biscuits for audience members.

Do come along and let Kevin show you how to find your civic voice!
