Letter: Westwood development is a positive move if building kept

The news that Westwood is to be sold for residential development should be seen as good news.
Development should be seen as good news.Development should be seen as good news.
Development should be seen as good news.

It is an opportunity to celebrate a significant era in Scarborough’s Victorian and Edwardian heritage and that heritage should be incorporated in the proposed development in a positive way which will enhance the whole project.

I travelled to Scarborough from the Blue Mountains just outside Sydney in May to celebrate the life of my great grandfather who, as clerk to the then Scarborough School Board, supervised the design, building, funding and staffing of the school and defended the Westwood school against the interference of a Canon Garod of Northallerton County Council Education Committee at the time.

Not only did my great grandfather Alderman William Ascough JP, mayor 1909-1910, play a very significant role in the early life of Westwood, until his death in 1926. My maternal grandparents both taught at the school until they married in 1904.

There are many memories of the Westwood school still alive in Scarborough and I am sure that those memories can be collected and told. And such a collection and their retelling will breath life into the future development of the site.
