Work has been completed on alterations at two Scalby Road junctions - the one with Stepney Drive, and the Woodlands Drive turn that leads to the hospital, crematorium, Graham School, Woodlands Academy and the Woodlands housing estate.

Just beyond the Woodlands Drive turn, Scalby Road narrows from two lanes to one.

Also, at the Woodlands Drive traffic lights, drivers given the green filter arrow to turn left are prevented from doing so if there are cars infront, in the same lane, that continue straight ahead, until their green light allows them through

The improvements have been carried out by North Yorkshire County Council’s highways team, and are the third part of a £4 million scheme to overhaul four of Scarborough’s busiest junctions.

County Cllr Don Mackenzie, the executive member for Access, said: “I would like to thank our highways team for carrying out this essential programme of works during very difficult conditions.

"Despite lockdown delaying the works starting, we have kept to our optimistic ten-week timescale.

“I urge drivers to pay particular attention to the new road layout on Scalby Road which sees a change to the markings of the northbound lanes, and new traffic light signals.

"As always, we will monitor the situation and welcome any views.”

Cllr Andrew Jenkinson, of the Woodlands division, said: “I am confident that the new-look junctions will work well into the future, coping with the predicted rise in traffic flows and housing expected to be built in the next few years around Scarborough.”

His counterpart, Cllr Liz Colling, representing Falsgrave and Stepney for North Yorkshire County Council and Scarborough Borough Council, added: “I’m delighted with the finished works.

“We will soon see the benefits of the improved traffic flow for our residents, businesses and visitors.”

Both junctions now have additional approach lanes, with upgraded traffic signals at Woodlands Drive/Scalby Road. New traffic signals are in place at Scalby Road/Stepney Drive, and there is a new pedestrian crossing point across Stepney Drive.

Woodlands Drive has been widened to lengthen the left and right turn lanes at the traffic signals, and the pedestrian crossing island has been improved.

The first two phases of the improvements were at the Scalby Road/Manor Road junction, and the Stepney Road/Stepney Drive/Sandybed Lane junction.

Work on the final phase at Stepney Road/Falsgrave Road roundabout at the Crown Tavern is planned to start next year. It will involve installing traffic lights on the approaches to the junction.

In their original layout, each junction was expected to reach capacity by the end of the Local Plan in 2032.

The County Council and Scarborough Borough Council are working in partnership on the scheme, contributing £150,000 each, with the bulk of the funding coming from the York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership, plus developer contributions.
