One passenger told The Scarborough News that passengers were frightened by the ordeal - before praising police for how they handled the situation.

“We were told over the system that the train was going to be delayed, then over the Tannoy they told us not to worry, but there was a knifeman at the station,” she said.

“Everyone was panicking, and of course we were nervous about the situation but police arrived very quickly and we were back on our way before we knew it.”

North Yorkshire Police say the suspect was alleged to have been carrying what appeared to be a kitchen knife.

The incident, which unfolded at around 8.15am, was to blame for a handful of minor delays on the network this morning.

The force say the suspect is a 38-year-old, although British Transport Police, which has taken over jurisdiction of the case, claim he is 39.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Officers attended over reports that a man appeared to have a kitchen knife at Seamer Station.

“The train was stopped and he was arrested after officers asked him to put the knife down.

“He was arrested at 8.27 on suspicion of possessing a knife in a public place, and the train was free to run after that.”
