5. Royal Opera House
Royal Opera House was built on the site of a former wooden circus building called Charles Adnam's Grand Circus on St Thomas Street. It was demolished in 2004 and a casino stands on the site now.
6. The Marshall & Snelgrove store
The upmarket department store on St Nicholas Street was just one of many branches across the country. It finally closed in 1972.
7. The Pavilion Hotel
The hotel was bought by the Laughton family in 1908 after moving across the road from their former home the Victoria Hotel on Westborough. It was bulldozed in 1973. Picture from the Max Payne collection.
8. Rowntree's store
Rowntree's department store and stylish cafe was once located where the Brunswick shopping centre currently stands.
