The ward has been refurbished after a request from NHS North Yorkshire Clinical Commissioning Group to provide additional beds at Whitby in response to the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.

The trust examined the available options and agreed with the commissioning group to reopen Abbey Ward, which has space to provide up to 30 additional beds in case they are needed during the COVID-19 emergency.

A statement issued by the trust said: “These beds can provide treatment for either non-COVID patients or those with COVID-19 symptoms, closer to people’s homes.

“This would include patients who no longer need an acute hospital bed, but who require ongoing support and rehabilitation before being able to return to their usual place of residence.

“The ward is currently undergoing refurbishment work, with the intention that this is completed by Tuesday April 14.

“We will then open the ward as soon as it is safe to do so after this date, making it available to patients thereafter.”

The arrangement does not impede the already scheduled works related to the wider Whitby Hospital Redevelopment plan.

The reopening of the ward has led to the creation of a number of vacancies at the hospital which may be found on the NHS jobs website.
