Actor James Norton backs new creative careers programme from Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre
An innovative new creative careers programme for young people aged between 15 and 17 is being backed by actor James Norton.
Aimed at teenagers in the Scarborough area, Propel is a free programme from the Stephen Joseph Theatre which will run on fixed days between January and July 2026, and offers young creatives the opportunity to gain hands-on industry experience across all theatre departments.

The theatre’s patron, James Norton, has long credited his interest in acting to his work experience at the SJT in the early 2000s. He said: ““I did my work experience at the SJT and I saw how passionate the team was there. The SJT has always ensured that local young people have access to creative opportunities. I am thrilled to be supporting Propel and look forward to seeing the next generation of talent Scarborough has to offer.”
SJT Artistic Director Paul Robinson says: “At the SJT, we know how lucky we are to have jobs we love. That’s why we’re passionate about helping others to get into creative roles.
“Propel will provide a unique insight into the breadth of creative careers that can be found in theatre.
“We’re delighted to offer this innovative and free opportunity to young people committed to a career in the creative industries.”
Propel is not just about engaging with industry-based experiences – it’s an opportunity to explore creative preferences, become part of a team and of the wider theatre network, and learn more about theatre generally.
Successful applicants won't just receive benefits – they'll dive into a world of theatre, gaining exclusive access that includes exciting ticket discounts and coveted invitations to press nights.
They’ll be handed a comprehensive programme pack, a backstage pass filled with opportunities to explore the inner workings of the entire building, from technical wizardry to marketing magic, design meetings to secret fundraising plans.
They’ll be actively encouraged to immerse themselves in as much work – both in-house triumphs and thrilling visiting shows – as possible, fuelling their passion for the arts.
This exceptional journey will be expertly guided by the SJT’s dedicated Assistant Producer, Lisa Chapman.
Application is by a simple online form; the deadline is 11.45pm on December 31 2025.
