Alison Hume MP makes a surprising discovery at award-winning Whitby deli

Alison Hume MP was delighted to discover her letter, congratulating The Yorkshire Deli on being named Best New Business at a prestigious event, framed and on display at their shop in Whitby.

Ms Hume popped into the Pier Road premises to say ‘Well done’ personally, whilst holding a series of meetings in the town.

After meeting owners Janet and Ben Lawson, Ms Hume admitted she was moved to learn they had not only kept her letter but also placed it on show following their triumph at the Deliciously Yorkshire Taste Awards.

Ms Hume, who became the first woman to represent Scarborough and Whitby after being elected in 2024, said: “As I told the Yorkshire Deli team at the time, coming first in such a fiercely competitive category reflects the quality and the passion behind their business.

“It was clearly deserved and I wish them every success moving forward. It’s a proper family business with Janet leading the way, her son Ben serving and daughter Sorrel baking. I love the Whitby Piccalilli made by local chef Rob Green!”

“I was touched to see the letter I’d sent them was up for everyone to see and I’m sure I’ll be writing them many more in the future!”
