Formed in October 2018, the company has been marking its first birthday by donating £500 to ten charities and community groups across the footprint it operates in, spanning from Redcar and Cleveland to Scarborough.

Hunmanby Community Free Fridge makes use of any food items discarded as unsaleable by local cafes, shops and supermarkets by storing it and making it available to local people.

The food is available free of charge to local residents of Hunmanby and the surrounding area.

Karen Hollinghurst, Hunmanby Community Free Fridge chair, said: “We’re very grateful to Beyond Housing for this £500 donation which will enable us to purchase a larger fridge and increase our stock storage capacity. It will help us to improve our service to the local community.”

Tracy O’Neill, executive director of customers and communities at Beyond Housing, said: “This is a great opportunity for Beyond Housing to support an enthusiastic and committed group of volunteers who are working hard to provide a valuable service within their own community. Their Free Fridge project will be making a significant difference to local people while also making use of good quality food items that would otherwise be discarded.”
